History was made at Braehead Arena in this Challenge Cup tie - but it was Fife Flyers that took the points in a 4-3 overtime win.
For the first time in Elite League history, the three-on-three overtime was initiated and despite the excitement of the game on a knife-edge, Braehead were unfortunately on the losing side.
Clan took the lead in what had been a well contested affair and it was Craig Peacock who opened the scoring, when he took the puck from Matt Keith and finished low into the net.
Fife didn’t long in responding when Carlo Finucci’s pass found Shayne Stockton and he sent the puck flying into Michal Zajkowski’s net to equalise.
The home side restored the lead through an excellent show of skill from Scott Pitt, who took the puck from Chase Schaber at the near side, moved into the middle and finished a neat effort.
But again, Flyers restored parity as Sebastien Thinel combined with Ryan Dingle to finish a well struck shot as both teams ended the first period at 2-2.
Clan had most of the chances in the second as they tried to force another lead, but it never came as both teams remained deadlocked.
Zajkowski made some great saves from Ryan Dingle and Justin Fox to get the fans on their feet, but it was Dingle who put Fife ahead after being fed by David Turon.
The home side managed to level as Matt Beca scored his first for the club with a backhanded effort to take the game into overtime.
While it was an historic night, it went the way of Flyers as Carlo Finucci scored the all-important winner to take the points.
