Braehead Clan picked up a point, but Belfast Giants took the win as they needed penalty shots to overcome Ryan Finnerty’s side in this Challenge Cup tie.
The visitors put themselves in front after eight minutes when Mike Forney’s low puck across saw Chris Higgins get the final touch in front of Michal Zajkowski’s crease.
Braehead got themselves level shortly after when Matt Beca teed up Alex Leavitt, who fired into the roof of the net from an acute angle.
But the Giants ended the period in front when Jim Vandermeer squared for Blair Riley. who applied the finish.
Leavitt levelled again for Braehead with a sublime finish after Zach Sullivan’s delivery was turned in at close range to tie the game.
Overtime couldn’t separate the two sides and the game went to penalty shots where the Giants prevailed to take victory.
James Desmarais and David Rutherford finished off their penalty shots to take the result, but Matt Beca and Daniel Åhsberg were denied by Giants goalie Jackson Whistle in the end.
