Braehead Clan started their three-game weekend in disappointment as Sheffield Steelers took the points in a closely fought contest.
While the result didn’t go the way of the home team, they again showed more positive signs of progress with two tricky away games to come, but there was a sense of what might have been.
The game somehow remained goalless after the first period when both sides saw good chances that arguably could have put away on another night.
Steelers’ Andreas Valdix tested Clan goalie Michal Zajkowski, who made a blocker save, before Mike Hammond robbed a Sheffield D-man, but saw his route to goal stop by a tripping call.
The away side were unusually nervous in the back again when Matt Keith set up Matt Haywood, but visiting goalie Ervins Mustukovs diverted it away.
Then Scott Pitt set up Jeff Ulmer, but again found Sheffield’s Latvian netminder equal to it as both sides drew a blank.
Clan opened the scoring in the second when Alex Leavitt teed up Scott Pitt, who blasted his shot into the net at the back post.
But the lead didn’t last long as Valdix smashed a one timer past Zajkowski off the crossbar to tie the game at 1-1.
Jesse Schultz clinched the points for Steelers when his shot beat the Clan goalie at his top corner and the Elite League champions were celebrating again.
