1 - 5
Belfast Giants

Braehead Clan’s two-game run of wins came to an end as Belfast Giants took the points in a 5-1 win in Glasgow.

It started a run of four games in five days in disappointment, but there will be no time to dwell on it as Clan head to Edinburgh tomorrow.

It was an even first period as Michal Zajkowski was tested early in the Clan goal as chances from James Desmarais, Blair Riley and Alex Foster needed the Swede to intervene.

Matt Keith also went close for the home side, but was denied by Stephen Murphy between the pipes for the Giants as both cancelled each other out.

But it was the visitors that took the lead as Desmarais played in Colin Shields, who sent a shot in at the far post to draw first blood.

The game was back on level terms by the end of the period as Scott Aarssen blasted one home from the centre of the Belfast zone after a Matt Beca assist.

Clan thought they had taken the lead when Beca fired a shot home, only for it to not count when referee Dean Smith had blown for a hooking penalty on Giants’ D-man Ryan Martinelli.

Martinelli would be the man to score when he returned to the ice after his penalty expired, tipping in a shot from Steve Saviano.

The visitors increased their lead to 3-1 when Mark Garside’s shot from inside the blue line found its way in at the near post.

A shot from Derrick Walser took a couple of deflections before the final touch came form Alex Foster for Belfast’s fourth.

Then it was Saviano with a fifth as he fired into the roof of Zajkowski’s net to complete the victory for the Giants.
