Mike Hammond’s third period double sent Braehead Clan into fourth place in the Elite League as they secured a 5-2 victory over rivals Fife Flyers.
Braehead fired the opening salvo when Matt Beca played a pass into the centre, where Lee Baldwin arrived late to send his shot past Fife goalie Shane Owen.
The home team doubled the lead minutes later when Alex Leavitt chased a rebound and tried to play an early pass, only for the puck to came off Flyers’ D-man Ric Jackman and into the net.
Fife had a couple of chances to test Michal Zajkowski in Clan’s goal when Justin Fox hit the post and Sebastien Thinel forced the home custodian into a blocked save.
Carlo Finucci also tried one when he used his pace to burst past the Braehead defensive save, but Zajkowski reacted quickly to plunge to the ice and cover.
Clan added a third when Cody Carlsson jinked inside and sent a backhanded shot into Owen’s top right hand corner.
But the visitors hit back almost immediately when Seabstien Thinel managed to squeeze a chance in at close range.
Carlo Finucci brought the Kirkcaldy side to within one when he fired one home and after two periods, it was a one-goal game.
Hammond alleviated the nerves in the third period, finishing off a Beca pass to make it 4-2 before securing the points with an empty net finish with a couple of minutes to go.
