Braehead Clan’s Challenge Cup hopes have ended for another season after current holders Nottingham Panthers sealed a 3-1 win on the night to take the tie 6-4 on aggregate.
After last week’s 3-3 draw, hope was high that Braehead could go to Nottingham and get the result that would take them to the Challenge Cup semi finals.
However it looked precarious at the end of the first period when Panthers took the lead on the powerplay as Robert Farmer set a backhanded shot into the net.
Matt Carter went close in the second period as Michal Zajkowski was called upon to make some key saves, as the home side sniffed blood.
Panthers were able to add a second when Stephen Schultz set up Alex Nikiforuk, whose angled shot left the Clan goalie beaten again.
Braehead went close with a chance from Corey Cowick blocked by Miika Wiikman in Nottingham’s goal.
But Nikiforuk - with his second - pretty much sealed Clan’s Challenge Cup fate with a solo effort that crept over the line to add a third goal on the night.
Scott Aarssen pulled one back late on for the Clan, but Panthers took the game and the tie to seal their place in the semi final where they’ll face Sheffield Steelers.
