5 - 4
Lowen Frankfurt

It was advantage Clan as Braehead edged a nine-goal thriller to beat DEL2 champions Löwen Frankfurt 5-4 in the first of two games this weekend.

It was the perfect start as John Tripp made his debut behind the Clan bench at home, coming up against his old mentor and former Clan coach Paul Gardner.

The visitors only needed a couple of minutes to open the scoring when Vladslav Filin found himself clean through on Clan goalie Ryan Nie and applied the finish.

Frankfurt doubled their lead a few minutes later as Wade McLeod drifted in from the right and beat Nie with a shot.

John Tripp’s side started to fight their way back into the game and started to pepper visiting goalie Brett Jaeger with chances.

One of them bore fruit as Jacob Doty executed a shot over the Frankfurt goalie’s left shoulder to reduce the arrears to one.

Matt Haywood levelled things up early in the second when he swept a low shot past Jaeger to complete the comeback.

From there a fascinating encounter played out, with Craig Peacock played in by Cameron Burt as he came in from the right and notched his third pre-season goal so far.

But Paul Gardner’s men hit back again as Nils Lisegang swept home from close range after Nie had blocked two good chances immediately before.

The German’s changed goalies as Jaeger sat out the third, replaced by Florian Proske, who was beaten by Craig Cescon’s effort, with Clan taking a 4-3 lead.

It was short-lived as CJ Stretch struck with a low diagonal effort to gave the 300-strong fans who came over from Germany something else to cheer about.

But it was Doty who killed them off when Jordan Buesa moved in on Proske to tee up Clan’s #28 to sweep home the game winner.

Both sides will return tomorrow to do it all over again.
