Cardiff Devils
5 - 0

Glasgow’s Braehead Clan suffered disappointment in their first game of 2017/18 with a 5-0 loss to Cardiff Devils in the Welsh capital.

John Tripp’s first game in charge of the team was set against a backdrop of an understrength team with some players still to come in.

Gaining vital fitness was also at the top of the priority list despite this loss that saw ice time given to both new netminder Ryan Nie and backup Gary Russell.

It was also valuable experience for the Solway Sharks trio Connor Henderson, Scott Henderson and Stuart Kerr, drafted in to help the team out this weekend.

The Elite League champions clinched the Aladdin Cup with this victory, going ahead after just four minutes when Justin Faryna diverted the puck in from Jake Morrissette’s assist.

Then Matt Pope added Devils’ second before the break after being set up by Gleason Fournier.

Russell took over from Nie around the 28 minute mark as Sean Bentivoglio made 3-0 late in the second, with Drew Paris getting the assist.

Bentivoglio notched his second in the third session as Cardiff found another gear, with the forward finishing off a well worked move.

Faryna followed suit with his double late on to seal the win as Morrissette teed up the former Dundee Stars forward, who finished his effort.

Clan now head to Nottingham Panthers as the Aladdin Cup comes to an end tomorrow, looking to move into next part of the pre-season programme with a victory.
