Glasgow’s Braehead Clan have gone out of the Challenge Cup after a 5-1 loss to Nottingham Panthers in their final Group A game ended their interest.

With league matters taking firm focus, John Tripp’s side ended their cup campaign with defeat to the team who reached the last 16 of the Champions Hockey League.

After a goalless opening session, Clan got their first real chance early in the second period as Tyler Scofield was hooked by Stevie Lee, with a penalty shot rewarded.

Scofield couldn’t make it count as Patrick Galbraith made the save in the Panthers goal to keep the scores at blank.

However Nottingham took the lead shortly after as Dan Spang opened the scoring with a shot into the top corner.

Braehead hit back almost immediately as Ryan Potulny levelled after being set up by Brendan Brooks to make 1-1.

Panthers kicked on and restored their advantage as Alexander Mokshantsev finished off a rebound, with Ryan Nie beaten again.

Then Robert Farmer added the home side’s third with a blasted effort to open a two-goal lead by the end of the middle session.

Corey Neilson’s men moved into another gear and by the early stages of the third had killed the game off with two more goals.

Mark Derlago was the first of those with a low rebound shot to eat Nie then Evan Mosey completed the scoring with Panthers’ fifth to confirm their passage into the last eight.
